Organized by the Berlin team as part of the Leviathan project with participation from the Budapest, Sofia and Berlin teams, a one-day workshop titled “Risk, Health and State Socialism: Central and Eastern Europe, 1950s–1980s” took place at the Institute for the History of Medicine and Ethics in Medicine at Charité Berlin. The event brought together scholars from various countries to explore the role of risk and risk-related practices in state socialist healthcare and medicine. Presentations covered a wide range of topics related to the history of risk under state socialism - including occupational health, neurological research, health statistics, nutrition politics, the history of AIDS, legal frameworks, and representations of risk in film. The workshop not only fostered scholarly exchange and the presentation of new research but also opened up important questions and new directions for future inquiry.
